Lyndhurst

Lyndhurst, a township in Bergen County, NJ, is situated on 4.89 square miles approximately 10 miles from Midtown Manhattan.  The Passaic River creates the municipal and county border at the west, and the eastern portion of the township is part of the uninhabited wetlands in the New Jersey Meadowlands.

The Meadowlands contain many species of fish, crustaceans, and mollusks and are considered to be an important natural habitat for a variety of wildlife.  The fragile ecosystem here, known for its bird watching, particularly migratory waterfowl, is protected by the Meadowlands Conservation Trust.  Residents and visitors can enjoy nature walks, stargazing at the observatory, canoe tours, and pontoon boat cruises.

As of the 2020 United States census, the township’s population was 22,519, an increase of 1,965 (+9.6%) from the 2010 census count of 20,554.

Lyndhurst is home to several locally owned and operated businesses mostly located in the business districts on Valley Brook Avenue, Ridge Road and Stuyvesant Avenue.  There are also many neighborhood delis, eateries, restaurants and stores allowing residents the ability to walk rather than drive.

Lyndhurst’s two train stations, Lyndhurst Station and Kingsland Station, are both served by New Jersey Transit’s Main Line to Hoboken Terminal. Transfer is available at Secaucus Junction to New York Penn Station, Newark Penn Station, and Newark Airport. At Hoboken commuters can transfer to PATH trains, Hudson Bergen Light Rail, and New York Waterway ferries.  New Jersey Transit also has bus service to the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Midtown Manhattan.

The Lyndhurst School District has six elementary schools serving students in grades K-8, and Lyndhurst High School for grades 9-12. Sacred Heart School is a Catholic elementary school serving grades K-8 that operates under the auspices of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Newark.
