Kearny, named after Civil War general Philip Kearny, is a 9.3 square mile town located in the northwestern corner of Hudson County, New Jersey, and a suburb of Newark.

The Borough of North Arlington and the Town of Lyndhurst border the Town to the north, and the towns of East Newark and Harrison form the southwestern border. The eastern border is formed by the Hackensack River, the Passaic River forms the western border, and the southeastern border is formed by the confluence of the two rivers into Newark Bay.

As of the 2020 United States census, the town’s population was 41,999, an increase of 1,315 (+3.2%) from the 2010 census count of 40,684.  Kearny is located within 10 miles of New York City, and is virtually at the center of the Boston-Washington megalopolis. It is also situated in close proximity to several major transportation routes, including the New Jersey Turnpike, Interstate 280, and U.S. Routes 1 & 9, 3, 7, 17 & 21.

Kearny is divided into three distinct geographic areas:  (1) Uplands, (2) Kearny Meadows, and (3) South Kearny.  The Uplands contains predominantly residential developments and commercial areas and includes major transportation corridors including Passaic Avenue, Schuyler Avenue, and Kearny Avenue. Kearny Meadows, which makes up the southern portion of the Hackensack Meadowlands, occupies 59% of the land mass of Kearny and is located between the Hackensack River and the Uplands.  South Kearny Peninsula is an isolated landmass that serves as the confluence of the Hackensack and Passaic Rivers. Because of its waterfront access and major transportation routes, South Kearny has developed into an industrial center.

The Kearny School District serves public school students in preschool through twelfth grade.  Private schools include Kearny Christian Academy serving students in kindergarten through 12th grade, Mt. Carmel Guild School, The Little Neighborhood Learning Center, and Happy Time Preschool & Day Care.
