Garfield, a city in Bergen County, NJ, is situated on 2.16 square miles, 12 miles west of New York City, 10 miles north of Newark, 4 miles south of Paterson and across the river from Passaic and Clifton. As of the 2020 United States census, the city’s population was 32,655, an increase of 2,168 (+7.1%) from the 2010 census count of 30,487.
Both the Garfield and Plauderville stations are served by the New Jersey Transit’s Bergen County Line, providing service to Hoboken Terminal, with transfers available at Secaucus Junction to Penn Station in Midtown Manhattan and to most of New Jersey Transit’s other train lines. New Jersey Transit also has several bus routes to the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Midtown Manhattan.
Garfield has many green spaces, recreational and sports facilities for young and old. 20th Century Field (5-6 baseball fields, football field, basketball, and more), Babe Ruth field, Little League Field, Danherts Lake Park with a hockey rink and jungle gym, and Belmont Park, as well as several other facilities. The Garfield Public Schools serve students in pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade and include one preschool, seven K-5 elementary schools, Garfield Middle School for grades 6-8 and Garfield High School for grades 9-12. Students are also eligible to attend the secondary education programs offered by the Bergen County Technical Schools, which include the Bergen County Academies in Hackensack, and the Bergen Tech campus in Teterboro or Paramus. Bergen Arts and Science Charter School also serves public school students in Kindergarten through eighth grade.
