The mayor and council of Hasbrouck Heights NJ presented certificates to the graduates of the community emergency response team (CERT) basic training course at the Nov. 10 council meeting. Residents including Mayor Rose Heck, council members, fire and police personnel and residents completed the CERT training class, to help them prepare for emergency and disaster situations. Heck said she invites the public to take the class next year to be aware and have the knowledge to help people in the borough. “We’ve all learned a lot and we still have more to learn,” she said. Hasbrouck Heights’ Police Chief Michael Colaneri said 25 residents completed the course this past year that was taught by Emergency Management consultant and retired Bergen County Sgt. Barry Leventhal. Colaneri said as long as a number of people are interested to take the class, they will do it again next year. Colaneri thanked Leventhal for putting the class together. He said without him it wouldn’t have been possible. “I know these people can help their neighbors and themselves with an emergency,” Colaneri said. Colaneri said not only was it impressive to have the number of people from the community participating, but he said the county was also impressed that the mayor and council participated.
